to the Department of Clinical Bacteriology
The Clinical Bacteriological Laboratory at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, SU, Göteborg, Sweden is located at two sites: SU/Sahlgrenska and SU/Östra. It is a part of Laboratory Medicine. At the Clinical Bacteriological Laboratory approximately 325.000 samples are analyzed per year by a staff of 120 persons and a total budget of more than 80 million Swedish crowns.
The main laboratory is located at SU/Sahlgrenska (Guldhedsgatan 10) and deals with bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, bacterological serology and infection control. A smaller laboratory for bacteriology and tropical medicine is located at SU/Östra adjacent to the Department of Infections Diseases.
The diagnostic procedures are, with few exceptions, accreditated by SWEDAC (Swedish Board for Accreditation and Conformity Assessment).
The Sahlgrenska University Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in northern Europe with 2,700 beds and more than 1 million out-patient visits each year. The staff is well over 15,000. The Clinical Bacteriological Laboratory is mainly focused on the diagnostic needs of the hospital. For more specialized diagnostic procedures e.g. serology and mycobacteriology samples are sent from the whole Västra Götaland region.
The typing and reference laboratory Culture Collection University of Goteborg, CCUG, is used on a national and international basis. An important part of the activities of the Clinical Bacteriological Laboratory is the advisory role played by the Infection Control Unit to minimize nosocomial infections (http://www.infektionshygien.se).
The Department of Clinical Bacteriology is also a part of th Institute for Biomedicine, the Sahlgrenska Acadmy, University of Goteborg. The development of new diagnostic methods and research on antibiotic resistant bacteria are examples of areas of research and education.
Most of the information on this home page is written in Swedish and deals with how to collect and transport clinical microbiological specimens.
