The Clinical Microbiological Laboratory at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, SU, Göteborg, Sweden is located at SU/Sahlgrenska. It is a part of Laboratory Medicine. At the Clinical Microbiological Laboratory approximately 900.000 samples are analyzed per year by a staff of 200 persons.
The main laboratory is located at SU/Sahlgrenska (Guldhedsgatan 10) and deals with bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, bacterological serology, virology and infection control.
The diagnostic procedures are, with few exceptions, accreditated by SWEDAC (Swedish Board for Accreditation and Conformity Assessment).
The Sahlgrenska University Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in northern Europe with 2,700 beds and more than 1 million out-patient visits each year. The staff is well over 15,000. The Clinical Microbiological Laboratory is mainly focused on the diagnostic needs of the hospital. For more specialized diagnostic procedures e.g. serology and mycobacteriology samples are sent from the whole Västra Götaland region.
An important part of the activities of the Clinical Microbiological Laboratory is the advisory role played by the Infection Control Unit to minimize nosocomial infections (http://www.sahlgrenska.se/su/vardhygien).
The Department of Clinical Microbiological is also a part of th Institute for Biomedicine, the Sahlgrenska Acadmy, University of Goteborg. The development of new diagnostic methods and research on antibiotic resistant bacteria are examples of areas of research and education. Most of the information on this home page is written in Swedish and deals with how to collect and transport clinical microbiological specimens.
